چکیده

Using the recently developed Cahn-Hilliard reaction (CHR) theory, we present a simple mathematical model of the transition from solid-solution radial diffusion to two-phase shrinking-core dynamics during ion intercalation in a spherical solid particle. This general approach extends previous Li-ion battery models, which either neglect phase separation or postulate a spherical shrinking-core phase boundary under all conditions, by predicting phase separation only under appropriate circumstances. The effect of the applied current is captured by generalized ButlerVolmer kinetics, formulated in terms of the diffusional chemical potential in the CHR theory. We also consider the effect of surface wetting or de-wetting by intercalated ions, which can lead to shrinking core phenomena with three distinct phase regions. The basic physics are illustrated by different cases, including a simple model of lithium iron phosphate (neglecting crystal anisotropy and coherency strain).

Lithium iron orthosilicate (Li2FeSiO4) with Pmn21 space group is theoritically investigated as a chathode material of Li-ion batteries using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. PBE-GGA (+USIC), WC-GGA, L(S)DA (+USIC) and mBJ+LDA(GGA) methods under spin-polarization ferromagnetic (FM) and anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) procedure are used to investigate the material properties, includin...

Theory of chemical kinetics and charge transfer based on nonequilibrium thermodynamics.

Advances in the fields of catalysis and electrochemical energy conversion often involve nanoparticles, which can have kinetics surprisingly different from the bulk material. Classical theories of chemical kinetics assume independent reactions in dilute solutions, whose rates are determined by mean concentrations. In condensed matter, strong interactions alter chemical activities and create vari...

The existence of global attractor for a Cahn-Hilliard/Allen-Cahn‎ ‎equation

In this paper, we consider a Cahn-Hillard/Allen-Cahn equation. By using the semigroup and the classical existence theorem of global attractors, we give the existence of the global attractor in H^k(0

Size-dependent spinodal and miscibility gaps for intercalation in nanoparticles.

Using a recently proposed mathematical model for intercalation dynamics in phase-separating materials ( Singh , G. K. , Ceder , G. and Bazant , M. Z. Electrochimica Acta 2008 , 53 , 7599. ), we show that the spinodal and miscibility gaps generally shrink as the host particle size decreases to the nanoscale. Our work is motivated by recent experiments on the high-rate Li-ion battery material LiF...

A Hybrid Level–set–cahn–hilliard Model for Two-phase Flow

We present a hybrid level–set–Cahn–Hilliard model for the simulation of two phase flow in micro structures. Our method combines accurate contact line dynamics in the Cahn–Hilliard equation with the computationally cheaper level set method in regions where not the full Cahn–Hilliard dynamics are necessary to describe the flow. This is realized by employing the Cahn–Hilliard model close to rigid ...
